Abstract

Objectives. Being able to assess vocational/occupational motives and flourishing in students from various careers is a key issue for vocational guidance. Determining motivational profiles and levels of flourishing by career can help to a better vocational choice process. In this field study we focus on two university careers: Psychology and Engineering. Methodology. It is a descriptive and correlational cross-sectional study. The sample was an intentional non-probabilistic type and comprised 565 first and second year students. Instruments. The Occupational Motivation Questionnaire (CUMO) and the Multidimensional Flourishing Scale were administered. Results. The data obtained indicate that Psychology students have more altruistic and satisfying motives when choosing a career, while Engineering students would be more motivated by the future and success and prestige in their choice. The altruistic motive in the choice of the undergraduate degree is the best predictor of social well-being in the students of both careers. Satisfaction predicts the psychological well-being of Engineering students, while altruism is the best predictor of psychological well-being of Psychology students. Finally, dependency inhibits the emotional well-being of Engineering students; however, no type of motives was associated with the emotional well-being of Psychology students.
