Measuring educational quality in the mathematics module of a economical sciences from a argentinian university using SERVQUAL

Abstract

Classrooms are an area of knowledge creation. The relationship between students and teachers is essential to promote learning development, strengthen university life integration and avoid student’s desertion. The objective of this research is to evaluate the quality of the teaching team of Mathematics Module services, both in face-to-face classes and distance classes, during the year 2023, using a tool that allows detecting where and how teaching and learning processes can be improved, based on expectations and perceptions of the incoming students and teachers to the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the National University of Río Cuarto (FCE-UNRC). Data collection is done through a survey technique. Target population is made up of students enrolled in FCE-UNRC degree courses who took the module during 2023. To measure quality, SERVQUAL model is used. From quantitative analysis, it can be seen that majority of new students show high levels of expectations when starting a university degree and assign low weight to individualized relationship between teachers and students. As a challenge, teaching team should focus on working towards good communication with students, which leads to the social construction of knowledge and the creation of a safe environment, enhancing confidence in themselves and with their peers, also fostering enthusiasm for learning meaningful contents.
